The use of Proprietary Blends has reared its ugly head once again. It seems that some companies feel that they can use this loop hole in the labeling guidelines in order to deceive their customers. But why deceive? I can't answer that question. I guess they feel that if they can make their product appear more powerful when its really just "window dressing" then why not. Window dressing is a industry term that refers to long list of impressive ingredients that either contain very little ingredient or are not standardized for a specific percent extract. According to the FDA summary of nutritional label rules, a proprietary blend may be listed with the weight given for the total blend only. When this is done, components of the blend must be listed in descending order of predominance by weight. Table 1 illustrates a common use of proprietary labeling in order to hide weaknesses of the ingredients. Now this rule has some exceptions when it come certain ingredients like ephedra and caffeine. Some states require the percent extract and milligrams of these two ingredients be listed no matter where on the label. So if the company wishes to abide by certain state laws and ship their product legally into these states they must list percent extract and milligrams. Now I will not say Eclipse will never utilize a proprietary blend, heck we already do, but I will say that if we do use another proprietary blend then we will list the percent extract and milligrams of every herbal ingredient.
