Topic: Exercise Safety and Etiquette

Exercise safety and etiquette are two understated but important aspects of working out. The following are just a few tips and guidelines that can help make your own, and your fellow member’s, workout safer and more enjoyable.

Exercise Safety:

- Warming up properly- It is always important to perform a light weight, high rep set of an exercise before you attempt to tax or exhaust a muscle. A good warm up brings blood to the joints and muscles and prepares them for the sets and exercises to come.

- Avoid momentum- Momentum not only increases the risk of injury, but it lessens the effectiveness of an exercise. When possible try to keep the target muscles under constant tension with proper form and controlled movement. When in doubt go slower.

Exercise Etiquette:

- Wipe machines after using them- Not only is it polite, but it lessens the risk of spreading germs. Please clean any sweat left on the equipment you’ve used.

- Return weights to their proper location- When using free weights, please empty bars and return the dumbbells and plates to their proper location. Not only is this considerate for the next person, but it also lessens the hazard of weights lying around.
