Exercise Frequency

Topic: Exercise Frequency

It is common knowledge that exercise not only can be used to burn calories, but can also increase muscle tone, elevate metabolism, and improve overall health. What is not frequently explained and clarified is how often a person can exercise and what determines what can be tolerated by his or her body. Many factors can affect how often an individual can exercise or train a certain muscle.

Here are a few facts:

-Exercise not only burns calories, but depending on how hard you exercise, it also causes a certain degree of teardown to the exercising muscles and to the joints. This teardown is beneficial to the body, and with proper rest and nutrition leads to dramatic progress in muscle tone and physical capabilities.

-If the workout intensity of the aerobic exercise or resistance training is high or heavy weights are used, then longer recovery and rest is required, often 2-3 days until that muscle can be trained again.

-If the workout intensity is low or light weights are used, then less recovery and rest is required, allowing the activity to be repeated or the same muscle to be exercised, possibly within 1-2 days. For the most part, other than low intensity cardio such as walking or cycling, and low intensity calisthenics and abdominal exercise, it is best to avoid exercising the same muscle two days in a row.

-Nutrition and adequate sleep is important. Exercise causes the teardown and proper nutrition, especially protein to heal the damaged muscles, and restful sleep are necessary for full recovery.

Exercise is an effective tool for burning body fat, increasing muscle tone, and sustaining and improving overall health, but mistakes such as overtraining and inadequate nutrition and rest can quickly sabotage your goals. Remember to pay attention to all of those aspects in order to make steady progress and to get the most out of your workouts.
