How it works
Acetaldehyde is a carcinogen found in cigarette smoke, car exhaust, and embalming fluid, and is the most toxic metabolite of alcohol. In addition to hangovers, acetaldehyde has been shown to increase the risk of contracting dozens of diseases including alcoholism, cirrhosis of the liver, and multiple forms of cancer. The neurons of the brain are the most adversely effected by acetaldehyde poisoning, which impairs brain function by interfering with the activity of neurotransmitters within and between the neurons.
According to the journal Biochemistry, published by the American Chemical Society, in addition to hangovers acetaldehyde has been shown to damage certain genetic building blocks, which end up being inserted into DNA. DNA is made up of chemicals called nucleotides which, when altered, can cause mutations that lead to cancers of the esophagus, larynx, and liver.
New research suggests that "prolonged alcohol intake beyond the capacity of detoxification of acetaldehyde in the body may increase cancer risk," says Dr. Shinya Shibutani, a faculty member at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
When you drink, alcohol is absorbed by the small intestine and carried throughout the body through the bloodstream. As it passes through your liver, alcohol is metabolized by oxidation to acetaldehyde, and then is in turn oxidized by the enzyme Aldehyde Dehydrogenase (ALDH) to harmless acetic acid. But not before the lingering acetaldehyde causes increased heart rate, nausea, headache, and other typical hangover symptoms.
Disulfiram (Antabuse™), a drug sometimes used in treating alcoholism, works by deactivating the ALDH enzyme and increasing the accumulation of acetaldehyde in the body. This produces very unpleasant side effects such as severe nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, and chest pain. Think of it as a “super-sized” hangover.
